The gap between healthy years and total lifespan varies in size and disease causes across world regions

Updated

Abstract

The healthspan-lifespan gap varies across six WHO regions, with 183 member states analyzed.

  • Life expectancy, gross domestic product, and noncommunicable disease burden are consistently correlated with the healthspan-lifespan gap.
  • Unsupervised machine learning identified three distinct clusters of global morbidity patterns related to the healthspan-lifespan gap.
  • Africa has the narrowest healthspan-lifespan gap but contains a significant number of countries with larger than expected gaps and has experienced the most substantial gap growth.
  • Europe is primarily represented by countries with smaller healthspan-lifespan gaps than anticipated.
  • Projections indicate that the healthspan-lifespan gap may continue to widen across regions by 2100.
