Updated

Abstract

Out of 210 participants undergoing major cardiac surgery, 42 developed delirium, with a similar incidence in both melatonin and placebo groups.

  • Delirium occurred in 21.4% of participants treated with melatonin and 20.2% of those given placebo.
  • The median duration of delirium was 3 days for the melatonin group and 2 days for the placebo group.
  • The incidence of severe delirium episodes was comparable between the two groups.
  • No significant differences were observed in length of hospital stay, mood, anxiety, or cognitive performance.
