Aged mice and elderly humans show a decrease in circulating and intrahepatic Hepassocin (HPS) levels.

  • HPS levels decline with age, which may contribute to impaired liver function.
  • Aged mice display a reduced response of HPS following liver surgery, indicating possible age-related dysfunction.
  • HPS-knockout mice exhibit severe liver regeneration issues, including increased mortality and impaired cell growth.
  • In aged HPS-KO mice, there is disrupted activation of key cellular pathways involved in liver maintenance.
  • Treatment with an AMPK activator improves liver function and regeneration in aged HPS-KO mice.
  • Exogenous HPS administration enhances liver regeneration in aged wild-type mice.
