Disrupted liver daily rhythms in fatty liver disease show CLOCK controls fat balance in laying hens

Updated

Abstract

Affected birds showed hepatomegaly and a significant decrease in the number of rhythmically expressed genes from 1,046 in controls to 81 in fatty liver syndrome (FLS).

  • Fatty liver syndrome is associated with hepatic lipid accumulation and elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • Reduced expression of interleukin-10 and increased expression of pro-inflammatory genes were observed in FLS.
  • Laying performance deteriorated, with delayed and dispersed oviposition noted in affected hens.
  • Extensive transcriptional changes were identified in liver tissues, particularly in lipid metabolism and circadian pathways.
  • CLOCK overexpression in primary chicken hepatocytes led to reduced lipid accumulation and enhanced expression of certain regulatory genes.
