Abstract

Long-term caloric restriction had the greatest systemic metabolic benefit among all interventions.

  • Long-term caloric restriction and exercise equally improved cognitive function in rats on a high-fat diet.
  • These interventions enhanced synaptic function, blood-brain barrier integrity, mitochondrial health, and neurogenesis.
  • They also reduced oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, apoptosis, and pathology related to Alzheimer's disease.
  • Weight maintenance following short-term caloric restriction did not benefit neurogenesis.
  • Short-term exercise during weight maintenance did not improve synaptic function or neuronal health.
  • Higher untrained fitness at week 12 correlated with better brain health at week 28 in high-fat diet-fed rats.
