How interactions between genes and gut bacteria may increase the risk of mental health disorders

Updated

Abstract

A sample size increase from 7% to 63% significantly enhances the power of microbiome genome-wide association studies.

  • A positive association was found between Bacteroides faecis and ADHD, with an odds ratio of 1.09.
  • Both Bacteroides eggerthii and Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron showed positive associations with PTSD, each with an odds ratio of 1.11.
  • Gene prioritization and Mendelian randomization analyses were strengthened by the use of METAL and MTAG methodologies.
  • No genetic liabilities for psychiatric diseases were identified that might affect gut microbiome abundance.
  • Genes involved in microbiome functions were expressed and enriched in human brain tissues.
