Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction may help brain protection and recovery after stroke by activating cell survival signaling and changing immune cell responses

Updated

Abstract

Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction (HGWD) significantly improved neurological function in MCAO rats and reduced cerebral infarction area.

  • HGWD is associated with increased neuronal survival and enhanced axonal remodeling and synaptic repair.
  • The formula promotes M2 polarization of microglia while inhibiting M1-type markers, suggesting a shift towards anti-inflammatory effects.
  • It may activate the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, as indicated by increased phosphorylation levels of PI3K, Akt, and mTOR.
  • In microglia, HGWD restored cell viability and promoted M2 polarization through the activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway.
  • LY294002 and rapamycin partially blocked the neuroprotective effects of HGWD, indicating the importance of the Akt pathway.
