Comparing Smartphone Use and Activity Tracker Data to Measure Daily Rhythm Stability and Body Fat

Abstract

A total of 78 participants contributed to 2182 person-days of data collection on circadian rhythm and adiposity.

  • Sleep onset and wake time did not differ significantly between smartphone app and actigraphy measurements.
  • Wake after sleep onset was longer with the app, resulting in a longer measured total sleep time by actigraphy.
  • Participants with obesity exhibited significantly longer total sleep time with both measurement methods.
  • Interdaily stability was significantly lower in the obesity group compared to controls using both methods.
  • A negative correlation was observed between BMI and app-measured interdaily stability.
  • Body fat percentage and visceral adipose tissue area showed significant correlations with both app-measured and actigraphy-measured interdaily stability.
