Humanin reduces brain cell aging and keeps nerve signal release stable in mature nerve-like cells

Updated

Abstract

Chronic treatment with HNG reduced senescence-associated changes in mouse primary cortical neurons and PC12 cells.

  • Cellular senescence is marked by permanent cell growth arrest and can be triggered by various stresses.
  • Senescent neuronal cells show increased levels of specific markers, such as senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity and SASP factors.
  • Humanin (HN) and its derivative HNG may help combat cellular senescence in neurons.
  • HNG treatment diminished increases in senescence-associated markers in a model of glutamate-induced senescence.
  • Chronic HN treatment preserved neurotransmitter release and sustained synaptic protein levels in senescent PC12 cells.
