Hyodeoxycholic acid may help bone stem cells fight aging and abnormal fat buildup in postmenopausal osteoporosis through a specific cell cleanup pathway

Updated

Abstract

Bile acids, such as hyodeoxycholic acid (HDCA), may play a role in postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) linked to bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) dysfunction.

  • Postmenopausal osteoporosis is associated with bone marrow stromal cell senescence and abnormal fat cell development.
  • A deficiency in 17β-estradiol (E2) is a primary trigger for these changes in BMSCs.
  • The specific metabolic pathways that connect E2 loss to BMSC dysfunction are currently unclear.
  • Hyodeoxycholic acid (HDCA) has not been previously examined for its potential impact on BMSC function in the context of PMOP.
