How Low Thyroid Hormone Levels Affect Messenger RNA for Pituitary Hormones
Updated
Abstract
A marked increase in TSH beta and alpha subunit mRNA was observed in hypothyroid rats.
- Hypothyroidism is associated with elevated levels of mRNA for thyrotrophin (TSH) beta and alpha subunits.
- In contrast, GH mRNA levels decrease in the hypothyroid state.
- Thyroid hormone replacement largely reverses the changes in TSH and GH mRNA concentrations.
- Thyroid status may directly influence pretranslational events involved in pituitary hormone synthesis.
- The simultaneous increase in TSH mRNA and decrease in GH mRNA suggests a differential regulatory effect of thyroid hormones on these genes.
