Detailed Immune Cell Differences Suggest Unique Causes in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Long COVID

Updated

Abstract

A total of 207 participants were included in the analysis of immune signatures in ME/CFS and long COVID.

  • Long COVID is associated with increased M2-like monocyte polarization and elevated CD80 expression across monocyte subsets.
  • Patients with long COVID show an expansion of dendritic cells and reduced expression of activation markers, suggesting persistent immune activation.
  • ME/CFS is linked to reduced expression of costimulatory molecules and impaired immune cell trafficking, indicating a state of immune suppression.
  • Correlation network analysis indicates more extensive immune interactions in long COVID compared to ME/CFS.
  • Principal component analysis distinguishes between immunophenotypic components of ME/CFS and long COVID.
