Wrapping Non-Enveloped Virus Shells with Fatty Layers in the Lab

Updated

Abstract

In vitro lipid-bilayer wrapping of plant viral capsids could enhance their stability for therapeutic applications.

  • Virus-like particles (VLPs) mimic virus structure but contain non-infectious genetic information.
  • Intact plant viral capsids from Cowpea Chlorotic Mottle Virus (CCMV) and Brome Mosaic Virus (BMV) can be wrapped in lipid bilayers in vitro.
  • Lipid compositions are selected to match the charge of the viral capsid, promoting stable association with the membrane.
  • This method may enable the development of enveloped virus-like particles (eVLPs) for RNA delivery and vaccine design.
  • eVLPs combine the stability of plant virus capsids with the functional benefits of lipid envelopes.
