Production of natural psychedelic compounds in living E.coli bacteria

Abstract

DMT production in E. coli reached maximum titers of 74.7 ± 10.5 mg/L under fed batch conditions.

  • Genetic optimization techniques were applied to develop a biosynthetic pathway for DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, and bufotenine in E. coli.
  • The study reports the first de novo production of DMT from glucose in E. coli, achieving a maximum titer of 14.0 mg/L.
  • Microbial production of 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenine in vivo was also demonstrated for the first time.
  • These findings indicate potential for engineered microbes to produce compounds with clinical applications for mental disorders.
