Rethinking Muscle Loss Concerns with Incretin Therapy

Updated

Abstract

Approximately one-quarter to one-third of total weight loss from incretin therapies consists of lean mass.

  • Weight loss from incretin therapies is comparable to other effective interventions in terms of lean mass loss.
  • Incretin therapies primarily reduce fat mass while improving the lean-to-fat mass ratio.
  • Improvements in physical function, mobility, and health-related quality of life are associated with incretin therapy.
  • Reductions in lean body mass may not indicate clinically meaningful sarcopenia in many patients.
  • Particular attention to skeletal muscle health is warranted in older adults and those with specific health conditions.
