Ineupatorolide B may reduce postpartum depression-like behaviors by affecting gut bacteria and their butyrate signals to the brain

Updated

Abstract

InB significantly alleviated depressive- and anhedonia-like behaviors in a hormone-simulated withdrawal mouse model of postpartum depression.

  • The antidepressant-like effects of InB were comparable to fluoxetine.
  • InB treatment reduced levels of systemic inflammation markers, specifically interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α.
  • Behavioral improvements were associated with restored expression of proteins related to synaptic plasticity in the prefrontal cortex.
  • Alterations in gut microbiota diversity and composition were observed in hormone-withdrawal mice, which were largely normalized by InB treatment.
  • Oral administration of butyric acid also alleviated depressive-like behaviors and restored key protein expressions in the prefrontal cortex.
