New inflammation marker and aging signs in diabetes: the possible role of platelets in age-related inflammation

Updated

Abstract

Analysis of 2494 participants revealed that traditional inflammatory indices are significantly associated with accelerated biological aging (all P < 0.05).

  • Platelet-based inflammatory indices could provide better risk stratification than traditional indices, particularly when platelets are placed in the denominator.
  • The 'High NPR + Accelerated Aging' phenotype is linked to the highest risk of diabetes-specific mortality, particularly within the GrimAge2Mort model.
  • Mediation analysis suggests that the triglyceride-glucose index may play a critical role in connecting epigenetic aging with diabetes-related mortality.
  • Novel inflammatory indices, especially the Neutrophil-to-Platelet Ratio (NPR), may show stronger associations with epigenetic aging than traditional inflammatory measures.
