Predicting Insulin Resistance in People Without Diabetes Using LightGBM and Validating Its Clinical Use with Patient Data

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 16,411 nondiabetic individuals, the LightGBM model achieved an accuracy of 0.7542 for predicting insulin resistance.

  • The model was developed using data from 13,128 participants and validated with 3,283 participants.
  • The final model incorporated 34 lifestyle-related questionnaire features and 17 biochemical markers.
  • All validation group AUC values were greater than 0.90, while test group AUC values were above 0.80.
  • Participants classified as high-risk for insulin resistance had a hazard ratio of 5.1 for developing diabetes compared to low-risk participants.
  • Key predictive features included BMI, fasting blood glucose, and various cholesterol and liver function markers.
