Changes in immune, cell death, and energy genes in Long COVID linked to symptoms 10 months after infection

Abstract

Individuals with Long COVID showed significantly higher expressions of IL-6, IL-1β, IL-10, SOCS3, HIF-1α, OAS1, MAVS, NRF1, DRP1, PARKIN, MCL1, and LIVIN compared to recovered individuals.

  • Higher levels of certain immune and antiviral genes are observed in Long COVID patients.
  • Transcriptional markers HIF-1α, IL-1β, IL-10, and NRF1 are independently associated with symptom burden after adjusting for age and sex.
  • Coordinated expression patterns indicate a potential connection among immune, mitochondrial, and apoptosis-related pathways.
  • Long COVID symptoms may be linked to ongoing immunometabolic activation based on the observed gene expression profiles.
  • Findings suggest that multiple biological pathways are altered in Long COVID, warranting further investigation.
