Abstract

Essence

This integrative review suggests some medication changes, augmentation strategies, and psychotherapies may help treatment-resistant anxiety disorders, while support for rTMS remains inconclusive.

Evidence

This systematic review summarized 26 randomized controlled trials and 36 open-label studies in adults with treatment-resistant generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder or agoraphobia, and social anxiety disorder.

Caveat

Most included studies were small and methodologically limited, and many positive signals, especially for drug switches and several augmentations, came from open-label rather than randomized evidence.
