Does intermittent tube feeding restore normal hormone and metabolism responses in critically ill adults?

Abstract

Peak plasma insulin concentrations were significantly higher in the intermittent feeding group (295.1 ± 167.8 pmol/L) compared to the continuous feeding group (128.1 ± 57.2 pmol/L, p < 0.001).

  • Intermittent diurnal feeding was associated with increased peak plasma insulin levels compared to continuous feeding in ICU patients.
  • Both feeding regimens achieved their nutritional targets without significant differences in plasma glucose concentrations.
  • No adverse events, such as hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, were reported in either feeding group.
  • Increased bowel motility was observed in the intermittent feeding group.
