Comparing Brain Stimulation Treatment Response in Long COVID-Related Depression and Major Depression

Abstract

Long COVID patients exhibited significantly lower antidepressant response rates, with a 38.4% improvement on the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) compared to 61.5% in primary major depressive disorder (MDD) patients.

  • Improvement rates for MADRS and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D17) were notably lower in Long COVID patients than in those with primary MDD.
  • Adjusted analyses indicated a significant percentage-point difference in improvement rates, with Long COVID patients experiencing a -23.0 point difference on MADRS and -21.8 points on HAM-D17.
  • Despite no significant difference in HAM-D17 response rates, remission rates were considerably lower in Long COVID patients, at 27.3% compared to 61.4% in primary MDD patients.
  • These findings suggest reduced responsiveness to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in individuals with Long COVID-associated depression.
