Treatments for brain tissue damage after radiation therapy or radiosurgery

Updated

Abstract

A very small trial found that 100% of participants receiving bevacizumab experienced at least a 25% reduction in brain swelling.

  • Bevacizumab showed promising radiological responses, but the small sample size limits the certainty of the findings.
  • Neurological improvement was reported in all participants receiving bevacizumab, while most on placebo experienced worsening.
  • An open-label trial indicated greater reduction in brain swelling with edaravone plus corticosteroids compared to corticosteroids alone, but results were of low certainty.
  • No significant difference was observed in the enhancement of radionecrosis lesions between treatment groups in the edaravone study.
  • No quality of life outcomes were reported in any of the included studies, highlighting a gap in understanding overall patient well-being.
