Ways to prevent constipation after childbirth

Updated

Abstract

Five trials involving 1208 postpartum mothers were included to evaluate interventions for preventing postpartum constipation.

  • Four trials compared laxatives with placebo, but none assessed primary outcomes like pain or straining during defecation.
  • One trial showed that women taking laxatives had a higher likelihood of having their first bowel movement within 24 hours after delivery (risk ratio 2.90).
  • Pooled data from two trials indicated fewer women in the laxative group had their first bowel movement by day four (average risk ratio 0.36).
  • More women in the laxative group experienced loose or watery stools compared to the placebo group (risk ratio 26.96).
  • Adverse effects were inconsistently reported, with one trial indicating increased abdominal cramps in the laxative group (risk ratio 4.23).
  • Only one trial compared laxatives with a bulking agent, showing no difference in pain or incidence of postpartum constipation.
