Different gut lining and nervous system immune responses to guided exercise in fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and both conditions

Updated

Abstract

A 16-week supervised combined exercise program is associated with phenotype-specific biomarker changes in patients with fibromyalgia (FM), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or their comorbidity (FM+IBS).

  • Fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome are linked through gut-brain axis dysregulation.
  • Patients with FM, IBS, or FM+IBS may experience low-grade systemic inflammation.
  • The exercise program's impact on specific biological markers was assessed in these patient groups.
