Body's Gut Response to COVID-19 and Illness Outcomes in Patients with Stomach Symptoms

Updated

Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 was detected in small intestinal epithelial cells in 15 of 17 patients studied.

  • Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in the intestines occurs without a strong inflammatory response.
  • Low levels of inflammation were observed in GI tissues, indicated by down-regulation of inflammatory genes.
  • Patients with GI symptoms experienced significantly reduced disease severity and mortality.
  • The reduction in severity and mortality was independent of sex, age, and other health conditions.
  • Patients with GI symptoms also showed lower levels of key inflammatory proteins in their blood.
