Abstract

Miglitol treatment increased plasma GLP-1 levels and improved cardiac function in hypertensive heart failure models.

  • Control rats showed marked hypertension, cardiac dysfunction, and elevated plasma GLP-1 levels compared to age-matched controls.
  • Miglitol treatment further elevated plasma GLP-1 levels and mitigated cardiac dysfunction and adverse cardiac remodeling.
  • Mitochondria in miglitol-treated hearts were larger and had denser structures, indicating enhanced mitochondrial fusion.
  • GLP-1 receptor blockade led to worsened cardiac dysfunction and fragmented mitochondria in cardiomyocytes.
  • In cultured cardiomyocytes, GLP-1 increased the expression of proteins related to mitochondrial fusion and ATP content.
