Testing injected donor fat-derived stem cells to treat chronic kidney disease in cats: a controlled trial

Updated

Abstract

Six cats received three doses of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells with no adverse effects.

  • No significant change in kidney function markers, including serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate, was observed in cats treated with mesenchymal stem cells.
  • Individual changes in glomerular filtration rate varied widely among treated cats, with some experiencing declines.
  • In comparison, placebo-treated cats showed varying changes in glomerular filtration rate, with one cat experiencing a notable increase.
  • Long-term follow-up is necessary to assess if mesenchymal stem cell therapy may influence the progression of chronic kidney disease in cats.
