New features of natural and environmental aging of human skin and helpful effects of soy extract

Updated

Abstract

Collagen I is time and age dependently reduced after a single UV exposure in human skin.

  • Biochemical and structural changes in connective tissue are linked to aging skin.
  • Differential expression of collagen metabolism genes, including Collagen I, III, and VI, is associated with UV exposure.
  • Older individuals show a lower baseline of hyaluronan (HA) and a reduced response to UV exposure.
  • Treatment with a specific soy extract may enhance collagen and HA synthesis in cultured fibroblasts.
  • Topical application of an isoflavone-containing emulsion resulted in a significant increase in the number of dermal papillae after 2 weeks.
