How Inulin Helps Improve Bowel Health in Adults with Constipation

Updated

Abstract

Daily intake of 12 g of chicory inulin improves functional constipation symptoms.

  • Stool frequency increased and abdominal symptoms decreased following inulin intake compared to placebo.
  • Participants reported enhanced social and emotional well-being related to quality of life after taking inulin.
  • Higher relative abundances of butyrate-producing bacteria, including Anaerostipes spp. and Coprococcus 1 spp., were observed post-inulin intake.
  • A carry-over effect was noted, with participants having higher baseline levels of certain beneficial bacteria showing greater improvement during inulin intake.
  • Inulin intake was confirmed to have a bifidogenic effect, increasing relative abundances of Bifidobacterium spp. and Anaerostipes spp.
