Iron Boride Nanostructures That Release Hydrogen in Acid to Help Treat Alzheimer's Disease

Updated

Abstract

Oral administration of iron boride nanostructures (FBN) in mice with Alzheimer's disease led to significant behavioral and pathological improvements.

  • FBN treatment resulted in improved learning and memory as well as reduced neuronal and synaptic damage.
  • Increased expression of synaptophysin (SYP) and dendritic spine density was observed after FBN treatment.
  • FBN treatment was associated with reduced accumulation of amyloid-beta and less tau pathology.
  • Treatment enhanced the expression of proteins related to mitochondrial fusion and improved mitochondrial structure.
  • FBN administration increased levels of antioxidant defense proteins and decreased markers of apoptosis.
  • Changes in gut microbiota-related metabolites were noted, indicating a possible involvement of the gut-brain axis.
