Kaempferol May Reduce Knee Cartilage Damage in Spaceflight by Protecting Mitochondrial Health Through NOX4

Simulated spaceflight leads to cartilage degradation in the knees of mice.

  • Cartilage loss was observed in both mice subjected to simulated spaceflight on Earth and those exposed to actual spaceflight.
  • Simulated microgravity increased markers associated with inflammation and aging in human cartilage cells.
  • Rotary culture conditions resulted in decreased energy production and increased harmful molecules in cartilage cells.
  • NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) was identified as a significant factor contributing to cartilage degradation under microgravity conditions.
  • Kaempferol, a natural compound, was shown to partially counteract the negative effects of microgravity on cartilage cells.
  • Systemic administration of kaempferol lessened cartilage degradation in mice experiencing simulated spaceflight.
