Does ketamine treatment in adolescence affect adult risk of drug abuse in rats?

Updated

Abstract

A therapeutic dose of ketamine (10 mg/kg) administered during adolescence does not increase the risk of addiction to alcohol or cocaine in adulthood.

  • Repeated ketamine exposure during adolescence was evaluated for its long-term effects on addiction liability.
  • Voluntary ethanol consumption and cocaine reward were measured in adult rats following adolescent ketamine exposure.
  • No significant increase in addictive behavior was observed in rats treated with ketamine compared to those receiving saline.
  • The findings suggest that ketamine may have a favorable long-term safety profile when used therapeutically in adolescents.
