Ketamine-assisted therapy for hard-to-treat depression

Updated

Abstract

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) was associated with reductions in depressive symptoms in 11 studies.

  • Improvements in depressive symptoms from KAP were observed, with some effects sustained for up to six months.
  • No significant differences were found between KAP and control conditions in the three studies that included control groups.
  • The included studies varied in treatment protocols, outcome measures, and study designs.
  • The methodological heterogeneity limits the ability to draw firm conclusions about KAP's efficacy or identify mechanisms of action.
  • Further rigorous research, especially randomized controlled trials, is needed to clarify KAP's effectiveness and underlying processes.
