Ketamine and Esketamine in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Clinical Effects and How They May Work

Updated

Abstract

Twenty-one studies were identified examining the effects of ketamine and esketamine on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including five preclinical and sixteen clinical investigations.

  • Preclinical evidence indicates that ketamine and esketamine may reduce compulsive-like behaviors.
  • Clinical studies show that ketamine can lead to rapid reductions in obsessive symptoms, although findings are inconsistent.
  • Most clinical trials focused on single administrations of ketamine, with limited data on the benefits of repeated dosing.
  • The current evidence supporting ketamine and esketamine as treatments for OCD is preliminary and heterogeneous.
  • Future research needs to emphasize larger randomized trials and explore the effects of repeated administration over longer follow-up periods.
