Uremic Toxins in Chronic Kidney Disease Linked to Brain Microbleeds Through the Kidney-Gut-Brain Connection

Abstract

CKD mice exhibited a 2.5-fold increase in brain microhemorrhages compared to controls.

  • Alterations in gut bacteria in CKD are linked to increased levels of gut-derived toxins such as TMAO, IS, and pCS.
  • Higher serum TMAO levels in male CKD mice correlated with increased brain microhemorrhages, while in females, pCS levels were associated with this increased burden.
  • Antibiotic treatment reduced serum levels of all three gut-derived toxins and improved working memory in male CKD mice.
  • The high-amino-acid diet increased serum TMAO levels but did not affect IS or pCS levels.
  • Gut microbiota analysis indicated an expansion of Lactobacillus and Ileibacterium in CKD mice, with no change in overall bacterial diversity.
