How reducing carbon emissions may affect work productivity and the economy: a modeling and cost-benefit analysis

Abstract

By 2100, economic losses from heat-related labour productivity could range from 1.5% of global GDP under a higher warming scenario to 0.1% under a lower warming scenario.

  • Productivity losses will be concentrated in low-latitude regions, notably southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East.
  • About 51.8% of global climate change mitigation costs could be offset by economic benefits from reduced labour productivity losses by 2100.
  • Between 2020 and 2100, cumulative economic benefits could offset approximately 17.0% of climate change mitigation costs with a 2% social discount rate.
  • Regions with higher benefits from reduced productivity losses than mitigation costs are primarily low-latitude and tropical areas with lower income, such as southeast Asia, Brazil, and Mexico.
  • More than half of climate change mitigation costs could be offset by economic benefits for major emitters like the USA, China, the EU, and India.
  • Economies dependent on fossil fuels, such as Canada, Russia, and the Middle East, are expected to have low benefit-cost ratios.
