How Korean Red Ginseng changes Lactobacillus levels to improve Alzheimer's symptoms in mice

Abstract

Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) at 100 mg/kg/day led to a 1040% increase in Lactobacillus species in the gut microbiota of Alzheimer's disease mice.

  • KRG improved cognitive behavior in mice, with significant effects observed at both 30 mg/kg/day (p < 0.05) and 100 mg/kg/day (p < 0.01).
  • Aβ 42/40 ratio decreased significantly (p < 0.01), indicating reduced amyloid beta accumulation.
  • Microglial activation was reduced, as shown by a significant increase in Iba-1 (p < 0.001).
  • Claudin-5 levels increased (p < 0.05), suggesting enhanced integrity of the blood-brain barrier.
  • Gut microbiota diversity was significantly altered, particularly with an increase in Lactobacillus species at both dosages.
