Lactoferrin changes gut structure and balances gut bacteria in mice under long-term social stress

Updated

Abstract

Oral lactoferrin (5 mg/kg/day) partially attenuated stress-induced fur deterioration and body weight loss in mice.

  • Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) led to significant fur deterioration, body weight loss, and reduced grooming behavior in male C57BL/6J mice.
  • Lactoferrin administration was associated with improvements in fur condition and body weight compared to stressed controls.
  • CSDS increased crypt number in the ileum and trended toward decreased expression of the protein claudin-5, while lactoferrin treatment increased crypt depth.
  • CSDS altered gut microbiota composition but did not change alpha and beta diversity; lactoferrin partially restored the Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio observed in control groups.
  • DNA repair enzyme activities were not significantly affected by either CSDS or lactoferrin treatment.
