LAV-BPIFB4 Protein: A Potential Treatment for Obesity-Related Inflammation and Heart Health

Abstract

Oral administration of recombinant rhLAV-BPIFB4 in ApoE-/- mice fed a high-fat diet reduces atherosclerosis by preserving endothelial integrity.

  • Chronic low-grade inflammation triggered by obesity is linked to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
  • The longevity-associated variant of BPIFB4 may reduce systemic inflammation and improve endothelial function.
  • In ApoE-/- mice on a high-fat diet, rhLAV-BPIFB4 treatment leads to lower infiltration of inflammatory cells (ICAM+ and CD68+).
  • Despite no change in overall fat levels, rhLAV-BPIFB4 is associated with reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines and slightly increased IL-10.
  • Conditioned media from pre-adipocytes treated with rhLAV-BPIFB4 displays an anti-inflammatory profile and may restore endothelial function in dysfunctional arteries.
