How Lifestyle Changes Affect Gut Health in Overweight People

Updated

Abstract

A total of 87 randomized clinical trials involving 6086 adults with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m were analyzed.

  • Most interventions did not result in significant changes in gut microbiome diversity.
  • Prebiotic consumption was positively associated with higher levels of Actinobacteria and Bifidobacterium.
  • Probiotic intake was linked to increased levels of Lactobacillus and reduced body weight and body fat.
  • No strong evidence was found connecting short-chain fatty acid levels to obesity and gut microbiome composition.
  • Variability in outcomes and methods was substantial across the studies reviewed.
