Nighttime light worsens metabolism problems in mice with genetic type 2 diabetes

Updated

Abstract

Exposure to light at night for 8 weeks exacerbates glucose intolerance and insulin resistance in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes.

  • Light at night is associated with a greater increase in body weight in mice compared to dark exposure.
  • Mice exposed to light at night show a higher incidence of developing overt type 2 diabetes.
  • The adverse effects of light at night on insulin resistance are reversible upon returning to dark nights.
  • Exposure to light at night decreases the survival rate of mice with type 2 diabetes.
