Abstract

Exposure to artificial light at night (LAN) may disrupt retinal metabolism and internal biological clocks.

  • Artificial light, particularly blue light from LEDs, can cause photochemical damage to retinal cells.
  • Photo-toxicity is linked to degenerative diseases of the retina, including age-related macular degeneration (ARMD).
  • Exposure to light at night can inhibit melatonin secretion, potentially affecting sleep and internal clock regulation.
  • Shift workers and adolescents may experience chronic desynchronization of their biological clocks due to LAN.
  • Higher incidence of breast cancer in nurses could be associated with melatonin inhibition and sleep disruption linked to LAN.
