Lignans may reduce depression by changing gut and brain interactions: findings from detailed biological analyses

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Flaxseed lignans were linked to improved depression-related measures through gut-brain and anti-inflammatory pathways.

Evidence

Mixed human participant, MDD mouse-model, and BV-2 cell multi-omics study reported altered participant gut microbiota and disease severity, reversed mouse depression-like behaviors and barrier damage, and reduced inflammatory signals in cells.

Caveat

The abstract does not specify the human study design, sample size, or control conditions, and much of the mechanism rests on mouse and cell models.
