Link Between Gut Inflammation and Mental Health

Updated

Abstract

Specific cell types were identified that link inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with neuropsychiatric disorders.

  • Oligodendrocyte-stratified variants associated with IBD were linked to multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia.
  • Astrocyte-stratified variants connected with ulcerative colitis were associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia.
  • Inhibitory neuron-stratified variants related to Crohn's disease were linked to multiple sclerosis.
  • Alterations in mean diffusivity in the left tapetum mediated 31.4% of the association from ulcerative colitis to schizophrenia.
  • Structural changes in the right inferior temporal region associated with Crohn's disease accounted for a 37.5% increased risk of cerebral aneurysm.
