Shape of Fat Storage Droplets in the Cell’s Protein-Making System Depends on Fat Molecule Curvature

Updated

Abstract

A lipid-based mechanism is identified that influences whether lipid droplets remain embedded in the endoplasmic reticulum or emerge into the cytoplasm.

  • The intrinsic molecular curvatures of ER phospholipids may determine the architecture of lipid droplets.
  • Lipids with negative intrinsic curvature, such as diacylglycerol, are associated with lipid droplet embedding in the ER.
  • Lipids with positive intrinsic curvature, like lysolipids, could promote lipid droplet emergence from the ER.
  • FIT2 homologs become enriched at sites of lipid droplet generation when biogenesis is induced.
  • DAG accumulation at sites of lipid droplet biogenesis may be regulated by FIT2 proteins, which could influence lipid droplet emergence.
