Lipid nanoparticles help deliver mRNA to different cell types inside the retina

Abstract

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) efficiently transfected Müller glia across all experimental conditions.

  • LNPs transfected several retinal cell types, including neurons and vascular cells, in specific contexts.
  • Subretinal delivery led to higher transfection rates compared to intravitreal administration.
  • Transfection efficiency was greater in degenerate retinas than in healthy retinas.
  • Removal of the inner limiting membrane increased transfection efficiency in healthy retinas after intravitreal delivery.
  • These findings suggest LNPs are a versatile tool for mRNA delivery to various retinal cell types.
