Lipidation may regulate the assembly and function of biomolecular condensates by integrating membrane association with phase separation.

  • Lipidation affects protein properties such as hydrophobicity and membrane affinity, influencing liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS).
  • Nuclear phosphoinositides, especially PI(4,5)P2, could structure membrane-less nuclear compartments through a process called PIPoylation.
  • Covalent lipidations like palmitoylation and myristoylation are associated with the organization of membrane nanodomains and nuclear condensate architecture.
  • Lipidation may influence how condensates interact with membranes, affecting their wetting and curvature.
  • PI(4,5)P2 metabolism is linked to chromatin remodeling and transcriptional control via LLPS.
