Liraglutide reduces high sugar damage and aging in blood vessel cells by activating a protective protein

Abstract

Liraglutide (LIR) treatment reduced markers of endothelial cell aging and dysfunction in high glucose conditions.

  • LIR decreased high glucose-induced endothelial cell senescence and lowered the expression of associated markers.
  • The treatment was linked to reduced levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress.
  • LIR increased the expression of antioxidant markers and promoted processes like angiogenesis and cell migration.
  • The therapeutic effects of LIR were found to depend on the SIRT1 protein and its regulation of p53 and p65 acetylation.
  • SIRT1 overexpression enhanced the effects of LIR, while its absence diminished these effects.
  • The findings suggest a connection between endothelial aging and the development of diabetic cardiovascular diseases.
