Measuring the Liver's Ability to Regrow During Fast Aging Using Regeneration Reserve and Status

Updated

Abstract

At 24 months, the Index of Regenerative Reserve (IRR) in rats exposed to constant illumination declined to 0.386 ± 0.19, while those receiving melatonin showed an IRR of 2.285 ± 0.41.

  • Age-related changes in liver cells may affect the liver's ability to regenerate.
  • The Index of Regenerative Reserve (IRR) combines binucleated hepatocyte proportion and mean ploidy.
  • The Integrated Index of Regenerative Status (IRS) adds measures of cell proliferation and cycle arrest to evaluate liver regeneration.
  • In rats with constant illumination, both IRR and IRS showed significant decline over time.
  • Melatonin treatment in rats exposed to constant light may preserve liver regenerative capacity, as indicated by higher IRR and IRS values.
